Marcel studied Geography (B.Sc.) in Kiel and Santiago de Compostela. After an internship in California, he used optical satellite imagery for kelp detection. In his master program Environmental Geography and Management (M.Sc.), Marcel focused on geoinformatics and remote sensing and completed an internship at the Danish Meteorological Institute in Copenhagen. In his master thesis, he derived the depth of melt ponds on Arctic sea ice from hyperspectral imagery. Since 2016, Marcel is a research assistant at EOM and keeps exploring melt ponds in his doctorate. In 2017 and 2018, he participated in RV Polarstern cruises PS106 and PS115.2 to collect field data on Arctic sea ice. Marcel is involved in the preparation of the MOSAiC expedition and part of the MOSAiC consortium.
